Trupanion vs Pumpkin vs Lemonade: How Claim Money Actually Reaches You
Short answer: Of the three, only Trupanion says it pays the vet at checkout, and only at clinics connected to its software (Trupanion, accessed Oct 16, 2026). Pumpkin's fast-pay service, PumpkinNow, sends money to you, not the hospital (Pumpkin terms, accessed Oct 16, 2026). Lemonade reimburses you after you pay (Lemonade, accessed Oct 16, 2026).
Not insurance advice. This page explains how each company describes its claim payments on its own website as of October 16, 2026. It is not insurance, financial or veterinary advice. Coverage depends on your policy. Check your policy documents or contact the insurer.

Three ways claim money can move
Marketing pages often say "fast" or "direct" without saying who gets paid. There are three models.
The insurer pays the hospital at checkout
Insurer pays the vet
The clinic sends the bill to the insurer. The insurer pays the clinic. You pay only your share. This is Trupanion's VetDirect Pay [2].
The insurer pays you fast, before you leave
Insurer pays you, fast
You submit the final invoice from the clinic. If approved, money lands in your bank. You then pay the vet. This is PumpkinNow [3].
You pay, then get reimbursed
You pay, then get paid back
You pay the whole bill. You file a claim. The insurer pays you back after your deductible and co-insurance. This is Lemonade's model [5]. Consumer Reports says most U.S. pet owners pay providers at the time of service and then file for reimbursement (CR buying guide, accessed Oct 15, 2026).
Trupanion: VetDirect Pay and when it doesn't apply
How it works at a connected clinic
Trupanion lists four steps [2]: 1. Visit a hospital connected to VetDirect Pay. 2. The vet sends the invoice through Trupanion's software. 3. Trupanion pays the vet once approved. 4. You pay what's left.
Trupanion says no pre-authorization is needed [2].
What you still pay at checkout
Your share can include exam fees, your deductible, co-insurance and any ineligible charges, according to Trupanion [2]. It also says pre-existing conditions, exam fees and routine wellness care are not covered [2].
If your vet isn't connected
You submit the invoice yourself, online or with a claim form [1]. You have 12 months from the date of service [1]. Payment comes by mailed check or by direct deposit, which you set up by phone [1]. If the clinic's system is offline, Trupanion says the claim may be handled as a reimbursement [2].
How many clinics are connected? Trupanion said "nearly 11,500" across the U.S., Canada and Australia as of October 2025 [2]. A newer count: not found. Trupanion points owners to its hospital locator [2].
Trupanion's speed figures don't match across its own pages
- Claims page: "over 70% of claims are paid within 24 hours" [1].
- Blog post (Nov 24, 2025): "75% of Trupanion's reimbursement claims are handled within 24 hours" [2]. The same post's FAQ says most are "processed within 12–24 hours once documentation is complete" [2].
"Paid" and "handled" may not mean the same thing. We show both and don't choose.
Pumpkin: what PumpkinNow is and isn't
Standard claims
Go to any licensed vet in the U.S. or Canada, submit the claim form and itemized invoice, and get paid "in a few days," Pumpkin says [6]. Its FAQ says you're reimbursed by check or direct deposit for 80% or 90% of covered costs after the annual deductible (Pumpkin FAQ, accessed Oct 16, 2026).
PumpkinNow
PumpkinNow is for eligible claims of $500 or more [6]. Pumpkin says it pays "up to 90% of eligible expenses" in about 15 minutes so you can pay at checkout [6].
The fine print
- Money goes to your bank, not the hospital [3].
- 15 minutes applies only if your bank supports real-time payments. Otherwise it may take 1–3 days, and you may have to pay the full bill at the clinic [3].
- No direct deposit on file means a mailed check [3].
- "PumpkinNow does not support direct payments to hospitals" [3].
- Claims can be ineligible for PumpkinNow because of amount, complexity, incomplete records or service hours [3].
Can Pumpkin ever pay the vet?
Its Connecticut sample policy says your vet can submit a claim for you, and "if you so indicate on your claim form, we can pay the veterinarian directly" [4]. That is not the same as payment at checkout. Whether this applies in your state: check your own policy.
Set-up Pumpkin recommends
Upload your pet's medical records and set up direct deposit in your account ahead of time [6].
Lemonade: reimbursement through the app
Filing in brief
Open the app, answer questions from its claims bot, record a short video, and upload the invoice and medical records [5]. Filing is app-only [5].
Filing window
180 days from treatment. 90 days in Texas [5].
Speed, as Lemonade states it
"50% of eligible claims are processed instantly." Most others are resolved within 5 business days. Complex claims may take longer [5].
Before your first claim
Lemonade requires medical records from a vet visit within 12 months of your policy start date [5]. Waiting periods also apply [5].
Same vet bill, three timelines
Picture one large, hypothetical bill at an emergency clinic.
- Insurer pays the vet Trupanion, connected clinic: The clinic submits the bill. Trupanion pays its share to the clinic. You pay the rest before you leave [2].
- You pay, then get paid back Trupanion, clinic not connected: You pay the whole bill. You file. Trupanion pays you later [1].
- Insurer pays you, fast Pumpkin with PumpkinNow: You ask for a final invoice and submit it. If approved and your bank supports real-time payments, money can arrive before you pay. If not, you pay first and get paid back in 1–3 days [3].
- You pay, then get paid back Lemonade: You pay the whole bill. You file in the app. Lemonade pays you after review [5].
What none of these pages tell you
- Independent proof of the speed figures: not found.
- Payout or denial rates by company: not found. U.S. regulators (NAIC) define ratios such as claims closed without payment and claims paid after 60 days, but the document we read publishes the formulas, not company results (NAIC MCAS ratios, accessed Oct 16, 2026).
- How claims feel to owners: Consumer Reports surveyed 3,583 policyholders. 44% got full reimbursement at their policy level on their latest claim, and 25% got partial reimbursement that was less than they'd hoped (CR buying guide, accessed Oct 15, 2026). CR's scores for each company are for members only, so we couldn't check them.
- Industry scale: NAIC reports $5,278.9 million in 2025 earned premium for pet insurance, with a 68.07% loss ratio (NAIC 2025 Market Share Report, accessed Oct 16, 2026).
How to check this for your own policy
- Read the claims section of your policy. Look for the filing deadline and who can be paid.
- Ask your clinic whether it's connected to Trupanion's VetDirect Pay, if you have Trupanion.
- Set up direct deposit and upload medical records before you need them.
- If you have Pumpkin, ask whether your bank supports real-time payments.
- Keep itemized invoices.
FAQ
Does Trupanion pay the vet directly?
Yes, at clinics connected to its VetDirect Pay software, Trupanion says. The clinic submits the bill and Trupanion pays its share at checkout. You pay your deductible, co-insurance, exam fees and ineligible items. At other clinics you pay first and file for reimbursement [1][2].
Does Pumpkin pet insurance pay the vet directly?
Not through PumpkinNow. Its terms say PumpkinNow "does not support direct payments to hospitals"; money goes to your bank. Pumpkin's Connecticut sample policy says it can pay the vet if you choose that on the claim form. That's not payment at checkout [3][4].
Does Lemonade pet insurance pay the vet directly?
No. Lemonade says it "works on a reimbursement basis." You pay the vet, file in the app, and Lemonade pays you after your deductible and co-insurance. Its own FAQ says very few insurers pay vets directly "and Lemonade is no exception" [5].
Is PumpkinNow the same as VetDirect Pay?
No. VetDirect Pay sends Trupanion's share to the clinic. PumpkinNow sends money to your bank account so you can pay the clinic. PumpkinNow covers only eligible claims of $500 or more, and 15-minute timing depends on your bank [2][3][6].
Which of the three pays fastest?
We can't say. Each company publishes its own figures: Trupanion, over 60% of direct payments within 60 seconds; Pumpkin, as little as 15 minutes with PumpkinNow; Lemonade, 50% of eligible claims instantly. We found no independent check of any of them [1][3][5].
Do I still pay anything at checkout with direct pay?
Yes. With Trupanion's VetDirect Pay you pay what's left on the bill. That can include exam fees, your deductible, co-insurance and charges your policy doesn't cover, according to Trupanion [2].
What if my vet doesn't take Trupanion's direct pay?
You pay the bill and submit the invoice online or with a claim form. Trupanion pays you by check or direct deposit. You have 12 months from the date of service to file [1].
How long do I have to file a claim?
Trupanion: 12 months from the date of service [1]. Lemonade: 180 days, or 90 days in Texas [5]. Pumpkin: 270 days from the date of service in its Connecticut sample policy [4]. Check your own policy for your state.
