How we check

Not insurance advice. We explain how insurers describe their claim payments on their own websites. It is not insurance, financial or veterinary advice. Read our disclosures.

Every page on this site answers one question: who receives the claim money, and when. Here is how we check the facts behind each answer.

Where facts come from

  • The insurer's own claims pages, terms and sample policies come first. We link to each one.
  • Independent sources (Consumer Reports, NAIC, NAPHIA) are used for context and are labeled as such.
  • Speed and payout figures are shown as the company's own claim ("Trupanion says…"). We say so when no one has checked them independently.

Dates

  • Every table and page shows the date we last checked it.
  • Each source in a page's source list carries its own "last checked" date.
  • We re-check money pages on a regular schedule, because speed claims and filing windows change.

When we can't verify something

We write not found instead of guessing. We never invent payout rates, denial rates, prices or speeds.

When a company's pages disagree

We show both versions and don't choose. Example: Trupanion's claims page and its blog give different 24-hour figures.

Corrections

If a fact is wrong or out of date, we fix it and note the change here with the date.
